Government Re-opens Karuma Bridge after three Months of Renovation

After three months of closure for major repairs, the Uganda Government has officially reopened Karuma Bridge for   light traffic. Thousands of northern Ugandans gathered on December 20^th, 2024, for the eagerly awaited reopening ceremony, marking a notable milestone in the country’s public infrastructure recovery.

The event was led by the State Minister for Works, Musa Ecweru, with preachers and residents celebrating the restored connection.

The Karuma Bridge, an essential link for travelers to northern Uganda and the West Nile region, had been closed since September 23, 2024, for much-needed renovations. During this period, motorists were forced to use longer and more inconvenient routes through Masindi Port and Murchison Falls National Park, leading to increased travel costs and disruptions.

Minister Ecweru acknowledged the challenges faced by residents and assured the nation of further infrastructure developments, including plans for constructing a suspended bridge at Karuma Falls.

Minister Musa Ecweru’s Remarks

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Musa Ecweru highlighted the resilience of the affected communities. He said, “This presented a unique challenge, just like Katonga did to the western parts of the country. The people were patient, and today, the town is coming back to life. Many called me during the closure, asking for help as they struggled to earn a living. I told them to hold on and trust that the road would reopen. Today, I am grateful that most of them have survived to see this day.”

Minister Ecweru also emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing similar challenges in the future, stating that plans for advanced infrastructure improvements are already in progress.

Impact on Local Businesses

The closure of the Karuma Bridge had a profound impact on businesses in the region. Joseline Busingye, who runs the Damzonian Pub in Karuma Town Council, shared her struggles during the three-month closure.

“For the past three months, I barely made enough money to run the facility and pay my employees,” she said. “At some point, we would get only one or two customers. I am happy that the government has finally reopened the bridge.”

Legislative and Traveler Feedback

Gilbert Olanya, the Kilak South Legislator, emphasized the urgent need to install expansion joints on the bridge to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. He called on the government to expedite these critical enhancements to ensure the bridge’s longevity and reliability.

Travelers and transporters also expressed relief over the reopening. Many had previously voiced frustrations about increased fuel costs and logistical challenges caused by the closure. The reopening of the bridge to light vehicles marks a positive step towards restoring efficiency in Uganda’s public transport network.

The Karuma Bridge spans the Kampala-Gulu Highway, a crucial route covering 310 kilometers and taking approximately 4-5 hours to drive. Its reopening not only restores a vital link between Kampala and Gulu but also revitalizes economic activities in the region.

Uganda continues to invest in infrastructure, the reopening of the Karuma Bridge underscores the government’s efforts to enhance connectivity and improve public transport. The restored bridge is expected to boost trade, tourism, and overall economic growth in northern Uganda and beyond.
